Prep Football: Brown leads area all-Ohio selections in DV and DVI

COLUMBUS — McComb’s Jerry Brown, who used the state semifinals as a stage to showcase his many talents, was named Ohio’s Division VI co-Offensive Player of the Year and five other area standouts were first-team selections in the Division V and VI all-state football selections released by The Associated Press on Wednesday.
With McComb trailing Marion Local 21-0 in the second half of the Division VI state semifinals at Wapakoneta, Brown rallied the Panthers, rushing for one touchdown, catching a pass and turning it into an 89-yard score and throwing a TD pass in the second overtime of what was a 34-28 triple overtime loss.
That performance typified the multi-dimensional talents of Brown, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior who averaged 9.6 yards per carry in rushing for 1,134 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also caught 31 passes for 512 yards and five TDs, played quarterback at times and was an all-Blanchard Valley Conference defensive back.
A second-team all-Ohio pick in 2011, Brown ended his prep career with almost 5,000 yards of total offense and 76 touchdowns.
Brown’s teammate Spencer Nauth was a first-team all-Ohio lineman in Division VI, Leipsic’s Devin Mangas a first-team receiver, and Ada’s Jake Ansley a first-team linebacker. Liberty-Benton’s Chase Cook and Patrick Henry’s Colt Pettit were first-team all-state selections in Division V, Cook as a receiver and Pettit on the offensive line.
Nauth, a 6-1, 275-pound senior, anchored the offensive line for a McComb team that averaged 472.3 yards and 50.4 points a game. Linebacker Cody Wilson (105 tackles, 21 for losses) was a second-team all-Ohio pick for the Panthers, who went 9-0 in the BVC and 13-1 overall.
Leipsic’s potent offense was represented in the all-Ohio selections by Mangas, who caught 62 passes for 948 yards and 14 touchdowns, and junior quarterback Zach Kuhlman, who earned second-team honors after completing 148 of 241 passes for 2,275 yards and 27 touchdowns. Leipsic’s Austin Brown, the BVC Defensive Player of the Year who had 52 tackles and three interceptions, was a second-team pick at defensive back.
Ansley was one of five all-Ohio selections from a 10-2 Ada team that reached the Region 24 semifinals.
Voted the top linebacker in the Northwest Conference, Ansley had five sacks, 16 tackles for losses and 124 total stops for a defense that posted four shutouts.
Ada running back Kellen Decker (1,565 yards, 20 TDs) was a second-team all-Ohio pick, while quarterback Mason Acheson (2,677 yards passing, 28 TDs), defensive back Matt Wilcox (60 tackles, 5 interceptions) and 6-4, 220-pound senior lineman Brent Numbers earned third-team honors.
Arlington’s Blaiz McBride, who averaged 39.2 yards per punt and put nine of 33 kicks inside the opponents 10-yard line, was third-team all-Ohio.
Liberty-Benton and Patrick Henry had two all-Ohio selections each in Division V.
Cooked earned first-team honors after catching 40 passes for 864 yards and 14 scores. L-B quarterback Mitch Linhart, who completed 83 of 148 passes for 1,428 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 860 yards and 12 TDs was a second-team pick.
Two linemen represented Patrick Henry on the all-Ohio list, Pettit on the first-team offense and Jake Carrizales on the second-team defense. Pettit is a 6-4, 250-pound junior who has reportedly been offered scholarships by a several Division I colleges, including Indiana, Purdue and Illinois. Carrizales was the defensive leader on a Patrick Henry team that reached the Region 18 final. The 6-2, 225-pound senior had six sacks among his 86 total tackles and 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Liberty-Benton lineman Zack Smelcer and defensive back Kyle Bowsher and Patrick Henry linebacker Logan Ziegler received special mention all-Ohio honors in Division V, along with Carey defensive back Justin Meek and Hopewell-Loudon running back Mark Bouillon.
Leipsic’s Edgar Ralda and Ada’s Micah Roberson were special mention picks in Division VI.
