UF women’s basketball team loses first game of the season

By BRIAN LESTER

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Kayla Brown had just tied the game at 37 early in the second half, and for a moment, it appeared the University of Findlay women’s basketball team had momentum on its side.

Northern Michigan University, though, took that momentum away, taking control with a 20-4 run en route to a 59-49 win over the Oilers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference encounter Saturday afternoon the Berry Events Center.

Brown, a former Riverdale standout and UF’s leading scorer, tied the game with 12:21 to go, but the Wildcats snapped the tie with a 3-pointer by Alyssa Colla and never looked back.

By the time the run was over after a trey by Lauren Gruber, NMU had a 57-41 lead and the Oilers (5-1, 3-1 GLIAC) were on their way to their first loss of the season.

UF was trying to start 6-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign but NMU (6-2, 3-1) stepped up defensively and limited the Oilers to 27.5 percent (14 of 51) shooting. The Oilers were 2 of 18 from beyond the arc.

Brown finished with 12 points, her lowest of the year, while former Riverdale standout Lacey Kessler scored 13 to pace UF.

UF turned the ball over 23 times and was outrebounded 33-23.

Colla finished with 11 points as the Wildcats shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field and overcame 29 turnovers. Gruber led NMU with 16 points and Abbey DeBruin added 13 points.

The Oilers will try to bounce back at 3 p.m. Saturday when they host Ferris State at Croy Gymnasium. The Bulldogs (3-3, 2-1) beat Tiffin 61-51 on Saturday.
