Oilers will open 2013 football season against Urbana

The University of Findlay football team will begin its 2013 season with a home game against Urbana, one of six the Oilers will play at Donnell Stadium this year.

The Oilers raise the curtain on the campaign Sept. 5 with a 7 p.m. nonconference encounter against the Blue Knights. It will be the first game against Urbana since a 42-21 win over Urbana in the 2009 season opener.

Findlay, coming off a second consecutive winning season under head coach Rob Keys, will hit the road for the first time nine days later when it plays at Northern Michigan in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

The Oilers finished tied for second in the league last year with a 7-3 mark. They were 7-3 overall as well, marking the first time since 2002 that they have ended a year with three losses or less.

Findlay closes out September with home games against Saginaw Valley State (Sept. 21) and Michigan Tech (Sept. 28).  The Cardinals were No. 10 in the country a year ago when Findlay knocked them off 29-27 on the road. The Huskies will be the Oilers’ Homecoming opponent and are consistently one of the better teams in the conference.

October begins with a rugged three-game road swing as Findlay plays a nonconference game against McKendree on Oct. 5 in Illinois. The Bearcats play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Oilers travel to Tiffin Oct. 12 and play in Columbus against Ohio Dominican on Oct. 19.

The Oilers play their only home game of the month against Lake Erie College on Oct. 26 before welcoming rival Ashland to town Nov. 2.

The Eagles enjoyed a perfect regular season last year won the conference championship before losing in the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Ashland was ranked ninth in the final national poll.

Findlay wraps up the regular season with a road game against Malone (Nov. 9) and a home game against Malone (Nov. 16).
