Here are some first-round and possible second-round matches at the Division III district tournament at BGSU I think are kind of interesting.
Of course, the second-round matches are subject to change depending on what happens in the opening round.
I just don’t know enough about some of the teams from outside the region coming into the Division II BGSU district to make a list for that tournament.
Feel free to add your own most-awaited matches in the comment section below.
113 — Jacob McCoy, Swanton, sr., 31-10 vs. Garrett Cunningham, New London, sr., 32-13
Two seasoned veterans, winner gets Sarreshteh in the quarters.
126 — Zach Smith, Cory-Rawson, sr., 29-7 vs. Brandon Kretz, Northwood, sr., 31-6
Another matchup of seniors with state tourney ambitions that I would imagine will wrestle like every match is their last match.
132 — Brayden Leist, Carey, sr., 41-3 vs. Trey Armbrecht, Liberty Center, jr., 27-13
A No. 1 vs. No. 4. Armbrect was fourth in a brutal Archbold weight class, trap match for Leist?
145 — Jacob Amburgy, New London, sr., 38-9 vs. Salvador Cantero, Fostoria, sr., 24-8
Winner gets Fahrer in the quarters, not sure what’s up but Cantero is struggling right now.
160 — Cory Frey, Upper Sandusky, sr., 43-7 vs. Ryan Patchin, soph., 40-12
Patchin, returning state qualifier, I could see both of these kids end up placing in this weight class.
160 — Matt Meyer, Fairview, sr., 35-9 vs. Chance Sonnenberg, soph., Van Buren 37-4
Meyer’s been here before, it will be Sonnenberg’s first district appearance after missing the postseason last year.
170 — Tony Reynolds, Fostoria, sr., 33-5 vs. Zak Covert, Ontario, sr., 42-7
Tough opener for Reynolds and an even tougher quarterfinal bout is possible for the returning state placer.
182 — Galen Powers, Patrick Henry, sr., 34-8 vs. Logan Horn, Plymouth, sr., 38-12
NWOAL champ vs. returning state qualifier in the opening round. Does it get much better than this?
195 — Chuck Basting, Huron, jr., 33-12 vs. Jacob Reisinger, Swanton, sr., 33-10
I think this could be an interesting bout. Winner gets Ishmael in the quarters.
285 — Isaac Sexton, Van Buren, soph., 30-8 vs. Jacob Hankish, Lake, sr., 35-12
Rematch from earlier in the season. Doubt Sexton sticks Hankish as quick as he did the first time they met.
285 — Jarett Bute, Antwerp, soph., 29-10 vs. Connor Careless, Norwalk St. Paul, jr., 11-4
Both returning district qualifiers I believe. Gotta give Careless from a solid St. Paul program the edge here.
285 — Alex Fry, Ayersville, jr., 29-9 vs. Ian Ramos, Western Reserve, sr., 46-0
How you have a 46-0 record finishing third at sectionals beats me but Ramos is the wrestler to beat here at this weight class.
Possible Second Round Matches
106 — Thurston Dyer, Upper Sandusky, fr., 36-3 vs. Damon Keister, Lake, jr., 37-6
Freshman vs. Junior for a spot in the district semifinals.
113 — Tyler Rogers, Margaretta, jr., 39-8 vs. Carson Mengerink, Upper Sandusky, jr., 35-6
Another big match for Upper Sandusky in the second round with a little luck, the Rams could have four semifinalists.
120 — Buddy Limes, Otsego, soph., 28-6 vs. Francisco Alvarado, Ayersville, jr., 23-4
Limes is a srapper and will give Alvarado everything he wants.
126 — Dustin Marteney, Delta, fr., 44-9 vs. Seth Morrison, sr., Genoa, 54-7
Another frosh vs. senior match up. Not sure if they’ve met this season yet.
132 — Mason Robson, Western Reserve, jr., 44-7 vs. Kenny Price, Archbold, jr., 26-9
Hopefully Price is healthy, he’ll need to be to get out of this weight class.
138 — Logan Day, Archbold, jr., 44-1 vs. Alex Guerra, Sandusky St. Mary’s, sr., 37-8
Two wrestlers from NW Ohio traditional small-school powers matching up here. They both know what’s at stake.
138 — Sammy SantaRita, Edgerton, sr., 45-4 vs. Jesse Gross, Norwalk St. Paul, jr., 35-3
Gross wants a return trip to state. SantaRita stands in his way.
170 — Grant Price, Mohawk, sr., 39-4 vs. Tate Oswalt, sr., 39-4
170 — Jimmy Spieth, Liberty Center, sr., 38-6 vs. Tony Reynolds, Fostoria, sr., 33-5
I do believe the quarters here should actually be the semis because these are top four kids in this weight class. IMO
182 — Tylor Pritchard, Upper Sandusky, jr., 39-5 vs. KC Hale, sr., New London, 40-8
Pritchard has been impressive but at the district tournament, no one can be overlooked.
182 — Lincoln Stansberry, Carey, sr., 37-4 vs. Logan Campbell, Ashland Crestview, jr., 44-3
Great matchup here. Winner has an inside track to the finals.
220 — Tyler Ash, Paulding, sr., 34-7 vs. Deaken McCoy, soph., 45-12
Returning state qualifier vs. an up-and-comer
