Boys Basketball: Arcadia, Vanlue fall at Fostoria

By ANDREW WILLIAMS
Staff writer
FOSTORIA — Three quarters won’t get the job done in tournament basketball.
When any little miscue can mean the end of a team’s season, it takes 32 minutes to survive and advance to the next round.
Arcadia and Vanlue found that out the hard way Wednesday night.
The Redskins dropped a 61-53 decision to New Riegel in the first Division IV boys sectional semifinal at Fostoria High School and the Wildcats followed that up with a narrow 50-49 loss to Tiffin Calvert in the nightcap.
New Riegel and Calvert will battle for a sectional title Friday night at 8 p.m. Fostoria St. Wendelin and Old Fort will meet in the first sectional final at 6:15.
Arcadia put together a solid first half, hitting 52.2 percent (12 of 23) from the field over that span and outrebounding New Riegel 17-11 to grab a 29-20 lead at halftime.
Things went south from there for the Redskins, as Tim Ink scored eight of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter to spur a 16-8 New Riegel run in the period and Arcadia’s lead was cut to 37-36 entering the final quarter.
“We have to figure out how to put a full game together,” Arcadia coach Cara Noel said. “We take one quarter off and it’s been an ongoing issue all season. That one quarter happened to be the third quarter, where they made their good run and we just added fuel to their run. With a good team, you’ve got to limit their runs. You can’t extend it and expect to win.”
The Blue Jackets took the lead for the final time on a basket by Grant Lescallett that made it 41-39 with less than five minutes to play. New Riegel ended the game on a 20-12 run and went 12 of 17 from the free-throw line during that span to keep Arcadia at bay.
“We changed up the pressure a little bit,” New Riegel coach Dave Losey said of his team after halftime. “Once we started getting some loose balls, we started rebounding the basketball, things just turned around for us. We started getting the ball back inside too. I thought we made a concerted effort to go inside. Michael (Kirian) and Jake (Dryfuse) had a good night inside.”
Kirian finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Dryfuse added 10 points and 12 boards. Josh Ireland led all scorers with 17 points and Shae Watkins netted 13 for Arcadia.
In the nightcap, Calvert never trailed after grabbing a 3-2 lead early in the first quarter.
Michael Bennett dropped in 18 points in the first half, before finishing with 28 points and 13 rebounds, as the Senecas rolled to a 26-15 halftime advantage.
“They did a good job of taking some of that stuff away tonight that we normally run,” Calvert coach Ted Willman said. “(Bennett) was making reads out of what we were doing to get some of those shots. Some of those were offensive rebounds too.
“We did a pretty good job of executing some of our sets and some of the sets that we had, I don’t want to say we ad-libbed, but we got to about the third option or fourth option on it and so that allowed us to make some reads and found him open a couple times.”
Nick Hagerty and Austin Smith refused to allow Vanlue go away quietly, scoring 17 and 13, respectively, in the second half to get the Wildcats within 46-45 with 42 seconds left in the game.
The Senecas hit 4 of 6 free throws the rest of the way, though, and a Smith 3-pointer made it 50-49 as time expired. Calvert shot 50 percent (20 of 40) from the field and outrebounded Vanlue 40-19 in the game.
Hagerty led the Wildcats with 23 points and Smith added 22.
“We extended our defense, we tried to pressure up to get back in the game,” Vanlue coach Dean Birchmeier said. “We were down eight or 10 and then they got a couple easy buckets when we were doing that. It just made the hole a little too deep to get out of.”
