Prep Track and Field: Grove boys off and running at NWC meet

SPENCERVILLE — Columbus Grove’s boys track and field team got event victories in the 3,200-meter relay and from Baily Clement in the high jump and sits in second place after the first day of the Northwest Confererence championship meet at Spencerville.
Lynea Diller won the discus for Grove’s girls as the Bulldogs are also second. Spencerville leads both the boys (four events) and girls (three events) meets, with the remaining finals set to resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Clement cleared 5-10 to win the high jump. Ada’s Blake Willeke (5-8) was sixth. Grove’s Kyle Shafer (12-4) was second in the pole vault, with Bluffton’s Clay Wilson (12-4) third and Columbus Grove’s Caiden Grothaus (11-0) seventh. Bluffton’s Hunter Smith (45-51/2) was third in the shot put, with Grove’s Rece Roney (45-4) fourth and Will Vorhees (42-31/2) sixth.
Columbus Grove’s quartet of Alex Giesege, Colton Grothaus, Boone Brubaker and Bryce Sharrits won the 3,200 relay in 8:28.57. Bluffton (9:01.12) was fourth.
Spencerville’s boys lead with 47 points ahead of Columbus Grove’s 38. Bluffton (17) is tied for fourth and Ada (5) is eighth.
Diller threw 127-8 to win the girls discus. Bluffton’s Kayla Edgington (95-3) was fourth and Ada’s Grace Nelson (92-0) sixth.
Ada Carlee Marshall (15-31/2) was second in the long jump, followed by Bluffton’s Ashley Baker (14-11/2), and Grove’s Mackenzie Clymer (13-10) and Hallie Malsam (13-81/4) in third through fifth.
Bluffton (10:37.17) was third in the 3,200 relay, Ada (11:03.84) fourth and Columbus Grove (11:24.70) sixth.
Spencerville’s girls lead with 32 points, followed by Grove (22), Bluffton (17) and Ada (16).

CELINA — A pair of event victories has the Ottawa-Glandorf boys track and field team in the lead after the first day of the Western Buckeye League championship meet at Celina.
O-G’s Anna Bellman won the discus to pace the Titans girls to second place. The meet continues with more event finals at 4:30 p.m. today.
Colin Laubenthal won the pole vault (13-0) and added a second-place finish in the long jump (20-41/2) as the Titans scored 42 points through four events. Celina (24) and Wapakonata (17) follow behind.
O-G’s 3,200-meter relay quartet of Brad Recker, Sid Moening, Trevor Ellerbrock and Mathias Trampe-Kindt won in 8:17.93. Ben Recker (48-31/2) and Jason Schnipke (46-93/4) were second and third, respectively, in the shot put.
Bellman won the discus with a throw of 124-7. Celina leads the girls team race with 22 points through three events, followed by O-G (20) and St. Marys Memorial (18).
Michelle Maag (4-8) was fourth in the high jump and O-G was third in the 3,200 relay.
