Prep Roundup: Stratton, Archer win NWC track athletes of year

BLUFFTON — Area athletes and coaches swept all of the top awards in the Northwest Conference as the league released its top award winners for track and field.
Columbus Grove swept the NWC Boys Coach of the Year award as Chris Grothaus was voted the NWC Coach of the Year while Tim Staley was selected as the NWC Girls Coach of the Year.
Bluffton’s Noah Stratton won the NWC Boys Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. Ada’s Brittany Archer was named the NWC Girls Athlete of the Year.
All-PCL softball
Columbus Grove swept top honors in the 2014 Putnam County League all-conference selections, with Hope Schroeder earning player of the year honors and Travis Gallmeier named PCL Coach of the Year.
A junior pitcher ad infielder, Schroeder starred for the Bulldogs inside the circle and at the plate. Gallmeier guided Grove to a 14-8 overall record and a 6-0 slate in the PCL in his first season as head coach.
Columbus Grove’s Katie Roose and Micah Stechschulte joined Schroeder on the all-PCL first team.
Rounding out that unit are Continental’s McKenna Scott and Alex Quigley, Leipsic’s Haley Gerten and Maddie Steffan, Miller City’s Elizabeth Schimmoeller and Jessica Vennekotter and Pandora-Gilboa’s Megan Maag.

Budke takes crown
SALINE, Mich. — Findlay resident Olga Budke won the Excel All-Star Gold Division all-around competition at the USA Gymnastics Region 5 meet last weekend.
The St. Wendelin freshman, who competes for Gold Medal Gymnastics, won the all-around competition with 37.125 points. She won the bars (9.375) and floor exercise (9.425) while finishing third on beam (9.375) and vault (8.95).
Gymnasts from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan competed in the event.
